Item Overview

Description

DUJARDIN, Edouard (1861-1949). Les lauriers sont coupés. Paris: Librairie de la Revue Indépendante, 1888. 8° (190 x 125 mm). Etcheded portrait of the author after Jacques E. Blanche. (Some spotting.) Original wrappers, uncut (lightly soiled). PRESENTATION COPY to Gaston Dubreville (author's inscription below limitation statement on half-title; correction to p. 62).

FIRST EDITION, NO. 42 OF 400 COPIES on 'vélin anglais mécanique'. Dujardin's short novel inspired Joyce with its technique of interior monologue. Speaking to Frank Budgen, Joyce remarked: 'I try to give the unspoken, unacted thoughts of people in the way they occur. But I'm not the first one to do it. I took it from Dujardin. You don't know Dujardin? You should' (F. Budgen, James Joyce and the Making of Ulysses, 1972, p. 94; also see K. M. McKilligan, Edouard Dujardin: Les lauriers sont coupés and the interior monologue, Hull, 1977).
