Cree records in his journal (see lot 43):
Mon 24th May 1841 - "Canton. Ordered to disembark troops at noon. Plenty of excitement and bustle. The force moving up the river was a fine sight. I could see the flashes of the guns and some heavy explosions and two large fires which broke out in different parts of the city."
