Inscribed upper left: Marquise d'Epinouse / fille du comte du Lac. Oil on canvas. 42 x 30,5cm. Framed.

Reverse side:
an aged label with notes on provenance mounted to the stretcher.

Provenance:
Ferdinand von Sury von Bussy - von Glutz - Blotzheim (b.1862), Solothurn 1889.

Marquise d'Espinasse is portrayed, the daughter of Count du Luc and the Lady of Electors Johann Wilhelm von der Pfalz (1658 - 1716), to whose Dusseldorf court
Douven was court painter after 1682. After the Elector von der Pfalz married Anna Marid de' Medici in 1691, he refined Dusseldorf into a stronghold for social events, balls, music and fireworks.
