Dorothy Kate Richmond Cool Shade gouache on paper signed with the artist's initials DKR and dated 1900 270 x 360mm Richmond has pared down the scene to its barest essentials and cleverly reversed the customary weighting of colour to convey the contrast between the cool shade of the stand of trees, where the sheep have sought shelter, and the heat of the day. An expanse of moody, olive green blending to blue forms the foreground, which is set against a triangle of lively complementary colours - gold and mauve, with just a hint, in a horizontal turquoise band, of a river, estuary or the sea in the far distance.
