Notes

After his academic studies with the German painter Julius Schnorr von Carolsfeld, the Austrian-born painter Johann Conrad Dorner moved to the Lativian city Mitau (German for Jelgava. Here, he married and becamed renowned for his dynamic portraits, which he later painted for the imperial court. In the 1840s, he moved to St. Petersburg and became member of the local academy. Here, he received the commission for the monumental painting of the St. Isaac's Cathedral. In the following decade, he and his family settled in Rome. Due to the reputation he had built up in the Russian cicles, Dorner was largely awarded commissions from Russians while in Italy.
