Notes

A 'Shibboleth' is a custom, phrase or use of language that acts as a test of belonging to a particular social group or class, and as such is used to exclude. From 9th October 2007 to 6th April 2008, Doris Salcedo's 'Shibboleth' transformed Tate Modern's Turbine Hall in London. In constructing a chasm in the floor of the Hall, Salcedo examined concepts of space, sculpture and architecture, and sought to draw attention to the shaky ideologies at the foundation of Western notions of modernity.
