Item Overview

Description

Doris Gerrard (20th century), The head of a young woman, her right hand to her cheek, painted plaster on a wooden plinth, in a perspex case, the head 33 cm (13 in) high Note: Doris Gerrard studied at Plymouth College of Art in the 1920s. She was married to Charles Gerrard, a painter and sometime principal of the J. J. School of Art in Bombay. Beverley Nichols described her as 'a sculptress of genius, completely wasted in India'. This work, probably executed between 1945 and 1948, came from her studio sale in the 1990s, the proceeds of which endowed a scholarship in her name at Plymouth.
