Notes

Provenance: With Gallery Edward Harvane, provenance on label verso given as Noel Carrington. Purchased by Justin Vulliamy 1975, thence by descent.

Gerald Brenan settled in the isolated Spanish village of Yegen in 1920 where he emersed himself in peasant life and ultimately wrote the seminal work 'South from Granada'. During the 20's he was frequently visited by leading lights of the Bloomsbury set including Betrand Russell, Lyton Strachey and in December 1923 by Dora Carrington, we may assume this sketch was made during this visit.
