Notes

???? ????? ?? ???? 20??

Born in Kyoto, Insho Domoto was originally trained in craft design, drawing patterns for traditional textiles, Nishijin-ori. But his passion for Japanese-style paintings (Nihon-ga) made him enter Kyoto Municipal Special School of Painting (Kyoto Shiritsu Kaiga Senmon Gakko) between 1918 and 1924. By 1925 when he won an award (Teikoku-Bijutsu Sho) with a large painting on Buddhist themes 'Kegon', he had been recognized as a brilliant young painter. After 1955 he pursued abstract expression, and it stimulated intense support in Japanese painting circles.

Another painting by the artist was sold in these rooms, 11 May 2010, lot 146.
