Notes

This picture, formerly attributed to Frans van Mieris, was first identified as by Van Tol by S.J. Gudlaugsson in 1959. The nervous brushwork is typical of much of Van Tol's work, and may be seen, for example, in the signed portrait sold in Paris, Tajan, 9 December 1999, lot 53, and the Two Children with a Mousetrap in the Rjksmuseum, Amsterdam. The illusionistic device of the curtain is also typical of the artist, and the chair with carved finials is found in other works by him, including one sold in the Adolphe Schloss sale in Paris, 5 December 1952, lot 55.
