DOMENICO FEDELI, CALLED IL MAGGIOTTO VENICE 1713-1794 ALLEGORY OF PAINTING oil on canvas 16 by 21 5/8 in.; 40.6 by 54.9 cm.

The present painting is part of a series by Maggiotto known as the Capricci fiamminghi, which were engraved by Giovanni Volpato prior to 1772 (see, Anna Maria Bulgarelli, "Profilo di Domenico Maggiotto" in Arte veneta, 27, 1973 pp. 220-235). The British Museum Print Room preserves impressions of the series, done by Innocente Alessandri, depicting the arts of Painting (the present composition), Geometry, Music and Astronomy (see British Museum, reg. no. 1951,0714.160).
