Notes

Maillart, who specialized in genre scenes and nudes, exhibited regularly at the Paris Salon beginning in 1870 after having been awarded the prestigious Grand Prix de Rome in 1864. Maillart exhibited throughout Europe including Munich and the historically important Exposition Universelle in Paris in 1889. He was commissioned to paint murals for the famous Chateau de Chantilly, illustrated books by Musset and Sir Walter Scott, and wrote"Athena," a two-volume history of art. His paintings are included in the Petit Palais in Paris and many other art museums throughout France.
