CATALOGUE NOTE

Known primarily for his genre scenes, portraits, landscapes and occasional interiors, Bates was born in Philadelphia. He studied with Gerome in Paris and also in Antwerp before settling in England. His work was exhibited in London at the Royal Academy and in the U.S. at the National Academy of Design, the Pennsylvannia Academy of Fine Arts and the 1893 Columbian Exposition. Works of his are in the collection of the Indianapolis Museum of Art.
