Notes

Denton Welch was an artist and writer who was born in Shanghai, China. He studied at St. Michael's, Uckfield, and at Repton, then for four years at Goldsmith's College School of Art. In 1935, Welch was knocked off his bicycle by a motorist, cutting short his artistic career. The accident destroyed his health and he died from successive illnesses related to his injuries at the age of 33.
