By descent from the sitter to John Campbell, 2nd Marquess of Breadalbane (1796-1862), and removed from his appartments at Holyrood Palace on 16th May 1860 to Taymouth Castle;
Thence by descent to Thomas George Breadelbane Morgan-Grenville-Gavin, Langton, Duns, Berwickshire;
His sale, London, Christie's, 27th March 1925, lot 165 (sold with another portrait, bt. by Gooden & Fox for £36.15).

Notes

The sitter was the daughter of Archibald Campbell, 1st Marquess of Argyll (1607-1661) and his wife Lady Mary Douglas. In 1657 she married George Sinclair 6th Earl of Caithness who died in 1676. She married secondly in 1678 John Campbell, 1st Earl of Breadalbane (1635-1717).
