Notes

Charles II was exiled on the Continent from his youth until his thirtieth year. During his absence, miniatures were used to inspire his supporters. This particular portrait of Charles was painted circa 1653, when he had begun to cultivate his trademark moustache. The artist, David Des Granges, had been appointed His Majesty's Limner whilst in Scotland in 1651.
The present lot appears to have been based on the large, full-length, oil portrait by Philippe de Champaigne, painted in 1653 (now in the Museum of Art, Cleveland, Ohio). It appears that the portrait was not engraved, and therefore Des Granges must have based his miniature on the original oil. There are a few other examples by Des Granges similar to the oil painting, and therefore to the present lot. They include a version at the Museum of North Wales (Twiston-Davies Collection) and one in the collection of the Earl of Jersey.
