Description

ANTIQUE SIGNATURE ND On Slip Of Paper Laid Down To Heavier Stock President Lincoln's Campaign Manager, Supreme Court Justice, & Illinois Senator. On a slip of paper laid down to heavier stock, approximately 1 inch high by 3 1/2 inches wide. It is signed by the Lincoln's Campaign Manager, Supreme Court Justice, & Illinois Senator, David Davis. Signed in ink pen: "DAVID DAVIS/ILLINOIS."

"DAVID DAVIS (1815-1886) was a United States Senator from Illinois and associate justice of the United States Supreme Court. He also served as Abraham Lincoln's campaign manager at the 1860 Republican National Convention, engineering Lincoln's nomination alongside Ward Hill Lamon and Leonard Swett. Davis was a pivotal figure in Congress's establishment of the Electoral Commission, which was charged with resolving the disputed 1876 Hayes-Tilden presidential election; he was widely expected to serve as the key member of the Commission, but after the Illinois State Legislature elected him to the Senate, Davis excused himself from the Commission and resigned from the Supreme Court to take his Senate seat. This set the stage for a unholy deal between the parties. The Republican Hayes would be President & in exchange he would end Reconstruction in the old Confederacy. The result of this deal was the racist whites passed many "Jim Crow" laws string up the segregation system the effect of which both black & white citizens are still suffering from today."
