Description

View of Lambeth Palace by the Thames, Westminster Abbey and Westminster Bridge beyond oil on panel 9 x 131/2in. (22.9 x 34.3cm.) signed and indistinctly dated 'D Turner/1804(?)' (lower left) PROVENANCE Anon. sale, Christie's, London, 15 April 1994, lot 125 (sold œ2,400). NOTES This picture shows the original structure of Lambeth Palace, the official residence of the Archbishop of Canterbury, prior to the extensive rebuilding and restoration undertaken by Edward Blore between 1828 and 1834. The Tudor gatehouse, the entrance to the palace, was built for Archbishop Morton between 1486 and 1501. The tower of St. Mary's dominates the buildings on the right, while in the distance, the outlines of St. Margaret's Church, Westminster Abbey and a section of Westminster Bridge are clearly visible.
