According to art historian, William H. Gerdts, Silvermine is an important example of early American Modernism. Painted two years after the avant-garde Armory Show 1913, Silvermine marks a pivotal shift from American Impressionism to the beginnings of Modernism and harkens to the future works of artists like Marsden Hartley and Arthur Dove. Brinley was a charter member of the Association of American Painters and Sculptors and helped organize and exhibit in the Armory Show. He was also an exhibitor at Alfred Stieglitz's progressive Little Galleries of the Photo-Secession at 291 Fifth Avenue. He was a founder of the Grand Central Art Galleries as well as a member of the National Academy of Design and the National Arts Club. Although he was active in New York City, his great love was Silvermine, Connecticut where he had a home and was a key figure in the art colonies of Silvermine and Cos Cob. This lot accompanied with a monograph by Elizabeth Loder.
