CATALOGUE NOTE

The Amsterdam-born Daniel Dupré made journeys to Switzerland and down the Rhine before he won a scholarship to go to Italy in 1786. Here he made several paintings of Italian views and a great many topographical drawings of Rome and the surrounding area. After his return to The Netherlands he used these Italian sketches as an inspiration for his paintings, as can be seen in this painting. In 1790-91 he returned and settled in Amsterdam.
