Notes

Dupré travelled to Italy in 1786, after winning a scholarship to fund the voyage. He was to remain for five years, during which time he made numerous drawings of Italian cities, monuments and, above all, landscapes. Some were used by the artist on his return to Amsterdam as studies to be worked up into more finished compositions. Two other drawings by Dupré of the landscape near Sorrento were formerly in the Unicorno Collection of Sam and Lily Nijstad, and were sold in Amsterdam, Sotheby's, 19 May 2004, lots 329 and 331.
