Notes

Christian Clausen Dahl sold a drawing and his book about Norwegian stave churches to support his two "students" Saleh and Balke. Out of gratitude Saleh painted an oil portrait of the old Dahl, which is part of the private property of the family in Oslo to the very day. I did not yet know that Sigwald (who commented his journey with drawings) drew a portrait of Saleh in Paris. It is wonderful that you found this. Yes, in many cases Saleh inscribed the painting himself, namely in Kawi writing (javanese) and next to it in Jawi (Arabian letters and Malayan laguage)." (translated from the German)
