Item Overview

Description

This scenic chromolithograph is from Pierre Toussaint Frederic Mialhe's Album Pintoresco de la Isla de Cuba. The work was printed in Berlin by Bernardo May y Co. It is undated but published circa 1855. Storch & Kramer created the chromolithographic plates after Mialhe's work.

This work is considered the finest pictorial record of daily life in Cuba in the 19th century. The work included several depictions of daily live, views of Havana, street vendors, dancers, cock-fighting, bull-fight, fishermen, and plantations including sugar-cane and tobacco.

Mialhe, originally from France, lived and worked at a printing firm in Cuba from 1838 to 1854. His artistic legacy included three works on Cuba entitled Isla de Cuba, Isla de Cuba Pintoresca, and Viaje Pintoresco al Rededor de la Isla de Cuba.
