213 by 145mm.
Provenance:

Marquis de Bourgignon de Fabregoules;
Flury-Herard, no.397 (L.1015);
Alfred Normand, his sale, Monaco, Christie's, 20 June 1994, lot 73.
This is the preparatory drawing, in reverse, for the engraving by Johannes Sadeler, one of a series of twelve images of the sons of Jacob drawn by van den Broeck and engraved by Sadeler (Hollstein xxi, 67b). The drawing for Simeon, also signed and dated 1575, and bearing the same identifying inscription, is in the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, Paris (see E. Brugerolles, Renaissance et Manierisme dans les Ecoles du Nord, exh. cat., Paris 1985, cat. 70, illus.). Brugerolles points out that the Paris drawing, like this one, is very freely drawn, in contrast to the dryness of the engraving.
The drawing illustrates a scene from Genesis 34:25-29. Dinah, Jacob's daughter, was raped by Shechem, son of Hamor the Hivite. He later wanted to marry her, but Jacob's sons refused him, saying they would never allow her to marry an uncircumcised man. Shechem agreed to be circumcised, as did all the men in the city, who wished to live with Jacob's offspring. However, Levi and Simeon, two of Jacob's sons, reneged on their agreement and slew them all.
