Lot 43: Cornelius Hankins still life, oil painting

Cornelius H. Hankins (Tennessee, 1864-1946) still life oil on board depicting a blue vase filled with fresh flowers and one fallen flower. Signed lower right edge "Cornelius Hankins." Hankins studied with Robert Henri, leader of the Ashcan school and William Merritt Chase in New York, and was active for much of his career in the Nashville, Tennessee area. Retains the original giltwood frame with oval opening and molded corner decoration. Overall very good condition, small loss (less than 1/8" diameter) in background of lower middle quadrant. Sight - 19 3/4" H x 15 3/4" W. Framed - 24" H x 19 3/4" W.
