Item Overview

Description

[Asia] Asia Partium Orbis Maxima. [Antwerp: 1593]. Hand-coloured engraved map of Asia. 390 x 480mm. Title set in a decorative panel at the upper margin incorporating strapwork designs and two heads, seas decorated with galleys, ships, sea monsters and fisherman, the land with tents and men hunting, window mount.

A very rare map of Asia published in the The Speculum Orbis Terrarae in Antwerp in 1593. Beautifully engraved and composed. Cornelis reissued his father's 1578 atlas in 1593 with a new map of Asia. Due to competition from Abraham Ortelius in the same city, both de Jode atlases did not sell well despite the quality of them, and neither were reprinted. Subsequently all de Jode maps are rare. Not in Tibbetts.
