Condition Report

The canvas has been relined. Overall with fine craquelure and slight surface soiling. Scattered minor frame abrasion along the perimter. Faint stretcher bar marks are visible along the perimeter. A small point of surface pigment loss at c.l. An uneven milky-green varnish is visible under UV examination with scattered areas of restoration, most notably along the left perimeter, overall.

Note:
A copy of a letter accompanying this painting identifies both the sitter and the artist and dates to work to 1869. Written by Adeline Stromberg, Washinton''s step-daughter, it relates that according to family history Brumidi was staying with William''s grandparents in New York and painted members of the family to pay for his board.
