Description

Constance Markievicz (Gore-Booth) (1969-1927) DEMAND HIS RELEASE! (DESIGN FOR A POSTER), 1924, mimeograph print on paper laid on card, signed in pencil with initials and dated lower right, 33 by 20cm., 13 by 7.75in. A pencil inscription in the lower margin records that this was drawn by Madam Markievicz whilst in prison. A collection of watercolours painted by Countess Markievicz whilst in Holloway Gaol were exhibited at the Daniel Egan Gallery circa 1925-6, and later sold to the National Museum of Ireland. This work was possibly intended for the republican newspaper that she wrote, illustrated, printed and circulated from prison, circa 1922.
