Ouvrant à trois tiroirs de longueur, cette commode adopte une forme
légèrement galbée en façade ainsi que les petits côtés. Un élégant
jeu de bois de rose plaqués en feuille crée un décor géométrique
soulignant les tiroirs. Ce travail des veines est mis en valeur par des
bronzes dorés de grande qualité composés de masques d'homme
centrant les tiroirs, de chutes d'angles à masques de satyres, d'imposants sabots feuillagés et de poignées de préhension à larges rosaces.
Ce modèle est caractéristique des productions d'Étienne Doirat, ébéniste du début du XVIIIe siècle.
Son inventaire après décès en 1732 mentionne un certain nombre de
commodes « en tombeau » ou « à la Régence », ainsi que des armoires,
tables ou encoignures, l'ensemble habillé d'amarante, de bois violet ou
de bois de rose plaqué en feuilles ou marquetés en quadrillage.
Ses meubles ne portent que rarement son estampille, l'obligation de marquer n'intervenant qu'après 1743. D'après Jean-Dominique Augarde qui a consacré ses recherches à cet ébéniste, il semblerait que Doirat n'ait estampillé qu'à la fin de sa vie, et de plus, pas de manière systématique.
La mise en valeur de ses placages se fait par le jeu des bronzes abondants et de qualité. Il fut, avant même Cressent, l'un des grands créateurs des formules décoratives et techniques qui feront le succès de l'ébénisterie parisienne sous Louis XV. A noter que la Wallace Collection conserve une commode datée vers 1720 présentant des bronzes aux chutes d'angle et aux pieds identiques à notre modèle.

Purchasers pay in addition to the hammer price, a buyer's premium from 0 to e 500 000:
25,20% (21 % + VAT).
For amounts superior to e 500 000: 19% (15,83% + VAT).
Lots from outside the EEC: (indentified by an*). In addition to the commissions and taxes indicated above, an additional import VAT will be charged (7% of the hammer price, 20% for jewelry).
For any member of the EEC, non assembled stones are liable to VAT 20%.
The auctioneer is bound by the indications in the catalogue, modified only by eventual announcements made at the time of the sale noted into the legal records thereof. Prospective bidders should inspect the property before bidding to determine its condition, size, and wether or not it has been repaired, restored or repainted. Exhibitions prior to the sale at Marc-Arthur Kohn or on the sale point permits buyers to establish the condition of the works offered for sale, and therefore no claims will be accepted after the fall of the hammer. BIDS
Biddings will be in accordance with the lot numbers listed in the catalogue or as announced by the auctioneer, and will be in increments determined by the auctioneer. The highest and last bidder will be the purchaser. Should the auctioneer recognize two simultaneous bids on
an object, the lot will be put up for sale again and all those present in the sale room may participate in this second opportunity to bid.
