Notes

James Gibson Craig was a Politician and leader of the Scottish Whigs. Dr John Gillies was a noted Historian and Classical scholar Colvin Smith (1795- 1875) painted Wilkie in Rome and on returning to Edinburgh established a successful portrait practice in Raeburn's former studio. His most popular portrait was of Sir Walter Scott of which twenty versions exist.
