Colin BIRCHALL (1948-2014), Acrylic with heavy textured surface, 'Penwith Landscape - (winter)', Inscribed to verso, Signed, Framed, 23" x 17.25" (58.4cm x 43.8cm), Note: Colin was a popular and prolific painter and stalwart of the St.Ives Art scene who died in January 2014. Born in West London in 1948, Colin studied Graphic Design and Advertising at Twikenham Art College and always worked within the creative industries. He achieved huge success as a Designer and Art Director in the ‘70s and ‘80s up until his move to Cornwall in 1986 where he worked for 3 years teaching Advertising at Falmouth University. Colin had been visiting St.Ives since he was a teenager and it was always his dream to move to the area. Finally following his ambition of becoming an artist, Colin began painting in 1992 and produced a wide and varied portfolio of work that led him to ultimately follow his passion for Abstract painting and open his own Gallery in St.Ives. Typically using Acrylic on canvas or board, his paintings are inspired by the ferocity and beauty of the Cornish coastline and although his work became increasingly abstract, the pieces still have a strong sense of place.
