Notes

The treatment to the shoulders with a swathe of drapery enveloping the base of the bust, the eyes and physiognomy can be compared to the work of Pietro Paolo Naldini, a sculptor working in Bernini's studio. Note in particular several portrait busts made by him in the 1670's and 1680's. Compare three busts, one of Annibale Caracci made for the Pantheon and now in the Pinacoteca Capitolina, another of James Gibbs in the Pantheon and a bust of Gapare Maraccioni in S. Maria del Suffragio, Rome.
