Lot 138: Circle of Giuseppe Mazzuoli (1644-1725) Italian, Florence, early 18th century

the martyred saint beheaded below, to the right the executioner with sword raised,

measurements note 22.8 by18.5cm., 9in. by 7¼in.

The present relief can be closely compared with the work of Giuseppe Mazzuoli (1644-1725) and his nephew Bartolomeo (1674-1748), members of the Sienese family of sculptors who continued the baroque tradition well into the 18th century. Compare the drapery of the executioner with the figure of St. John the Baptist by Giuseppe Mazzuoli as well as the modello of the Deposition by Bartolomeo both in the Chigi Collection.
