Chung Sang-Hwa Spending long Korean winters secluded in his studio quietly, Dansaekhwa master Chung Sang-Hwa would observe the endless layers of light and snow in the rural landscape. Throughout the seasons, he would ponder the manifestation of life and matters such as existence and physicality, exploring them in his artistic exercise. At its very essence, Untitled 81-7- 12 depicts Chung’s discoveries, characterized by the richness of white paint and subtle color variations in the interstices. Displaying great textural depth, the present work is rendered in Chung’s most celebrated style through a ritualistic process of applying and reapplying paint in countless layers then cutting into the surface of the canvas to create a grid-like composition.
