Kehrer was known as both a painter and a draughtsman of wildlife and hunting scenes. He provided illustrations for the Taschenbuch für Forst und Jagdschriftsteller [The Handbook for Lovers of Forestry and Hunting] written by the famous chronicler of hunting, K. F. v. Wildungen. He was also given a commission from King Friedrich I of Württemberg to decorate the ``moose-house'' with hunting scenes.
