Description

Walter, Christian J. (American Western Pa. 1872 - 1938) , Nocturnal Moonlit Snowy Farmscape, circa 1920, oil on canvas, signed Chr. Walter lower right, framed in a reproduction carved arts and crafts frame, with the image measuring 26 by 22 inches and the frame measuring 36 by 31 inches. Biographical Information: A native of the Pittsburgh area, he remained loyal to the region. He became a self-taught impressionist painter of Pennsylvania and eastern Ohio landscapes. He had no formal training and little travel, but studied art exhibitions that came through his native Pittsburgh. The first exhibition of his work was at the Premiere Carnegie International Exhibition in 1896. There he was a key figure in the art world, heading the 1936 Federal Art Project and helping to found the Associated Artists of Pittsburgh. Close friend, George Luks, was a major influence.
