NOTE

As the inscription suggests, his sitter Baron de Toussainet held high rank at the Imperial Court under the Emperor Franz Joseph and later the Empress Maria Theresia, where he was a Privy Counsellor and Chancellor of Hungary and Bohemia. These portraits were no doubt painted in Vienna where Seybold was first appointed `Titular-Cammer Maler' in 1749. Thereafter he worked as court painter both in Vienna and at the Saxon court in Dresden. These pictures, with the sitters set simply head and shoulders against a neutral background, exemplify his intimate and highly polished portait style, which clearly reflects the influence of his fellow countryman Balthasar Denner.
