Item Overview

Description

CHARLIE EGALIE TJAPALTJARRI (CIRCA 1938 - 2002)
Budgerigar Dreaming, 1993
synthetic polymer paint on linen
135 x 177 cm

Provenance: Jinta Desert Art Gallery, Sydney Private Collection, Sydney Sold with original gallery documentation and copies of photographs of the artist creating the work Born at Pikilyi (Vaughan Springs) Charlie Egalie began painting in 1975 after abandoning his life as a stockman. In this major work he has depicted the Budgerigar Dreaming site of Partilirri, north west of the Truer Range. The concentric circles are the camps of the birds, and the tracks show their movement as they fly looking for food. Budgerigars breed prolifically in the desert and form large brilliant green flocks as they wheel through the sky searching for water. Such gatherings are similar in nature to the 'coming together' of the mythological ancestors. They are likened to gatherings of boys when drawn together for ceremonies associated with their initiation.
