Item Overview

Description

Charles Wynne Nicholls RHA (1831-1903) A YOUNG WOMAN IN DISTRESS, ATTENDED BY HER MAID (A PAIR) one signed with initials lower right; the other signed lower left gouache on board 25 by 36cm., 10 by 14in. A successful Victorian genre painter, Nicholls was born in Dawson Street, Dublin and studied at the RDS Drawing School and the RHA school. He exhibited regularly with both the RHA and the RA. His figurative works were highly popular, often meeting the great demand for 'oriental' subjects, as in the present pair where the chaste young heroine's pale complexion is directly contrasted with that of her 'inscrutable' dark servant. See Strickland, Vol.II, p. 172. E2,000-3, 000 (E1,300-2,000 sterling approx.)
