(French, 1826-1871) HAUTEVILLE HOUSE (GUERNSEY) titled "Hauteville House" in pencil on verso vintage salt print 33/4 x 215/16 in. (9.5 x 6.8 cm) 1855 PROVENANCE Private Collection, FRANCE After leaving the island of Jersey in 1855, Victor Hugo moved in exile with his family to Guernsey. In this rare view of his house, Hugo verified the framing and directed the operation; the camera was operated by either his son Charles-Victor or Auguste Vacquerie. Only three other views of this house are known, each unique; they reside in the collections of the MusTe d'Orsay and the Maison de Victor Hugo. This year marks the bicentennial of Victor Hugo's birth.
