Garland lived in both London and Newlyn and submitted several works to both the Royal Academy and the British Institution. He specialised in child portraiture. Less commented on are his facility in the depiction of animals, which in the present picture, owes something to the anthropomorphising talents of Briton Riviere. The interior depicted is probably that of J Rolls Hoare's house, West Grinstead Park, which he let from Sir Merrik Burrell, owner of neighbouring Knepp Castle.
