Conceived in 1928-9, the present work is a unique cast of the working model of the monumental Portland stone figure for Imperial Chemical House, Millbank, cast in 1935. Both this work and the maquette for Chemistry mark Jagger's re-engagement with the theme of the heroic worker figure, and the very different characteristics of each discipline are handled with great skill. As shipping from around the world passes back and forth beneath his feet, the powerful figure of the stevedore who sits astride the globe is a truly imperial image.
