Notes

A native of Yorkshire, Jagger was trained first in the Sheffield School of Art and then at the Royal College of Art, where he received many honors. He won the Prix de Rome in 1914 but forfeited his study in favor of military service for the war, which had begun that year. In 1926, Jagger was elected an Associate of the Royal Academy after being awarded a Special Gold Medal for exceptional work.

This sculpture was commissioned by the late Viscount Esher and was executed by Jagger in one sitting in 1922.
