Item Overview

Description

CHARLES MOORE, FIRE HOSES AGAINST BIRMINGHAM STUDENT. 8 x 12- inch image on 11 x 14- inch sheet, signed on the bottom margin with dedication. These photographs of "Bull" Connors' police force using fire hoses and police dogs against student demonstrators were important images for the Civil Rights movement.
Lassiter collection (See Lot 73) Here is Lassiter's note: " Charles and Ken traveled to many college campuses presenting a slide show, Powerful Days Kodak created for him. These civil rights photographs were accompanied by the songs of the time by Joan Collins, Pete Seeger and Joan Baez. Senator Jacob Javits said, "These photographs overturned the tide of opposition to the Civil Rights Act of 1964 when they were shown to Congress, thus enabling passage of the Act." This led to Moore receiving the first Kodak Crystal Eagle Award for Journalism that Impacted Society by the University of Missouri School of Journalism. Charles and Ken became friends traveling together and he presented us with this image."
