Notes

The attribution to Challe was first suggested by Edward Croft Murray. A comparable drawing with the figures likewise drawn only with the brush, as in the present sheet, is at Stockholm, P. Bjurström, French Drawings, Eighteenth Century, Stockholm, 1982, no. 893.
