Item Overview

Description

A signed bronze and glass inkwell by sculptor, Charles Henry Niehaus (1855 - 1935, America). This piece, of museum quality, has two faceted cut glass inkwells with bronze lids which sit in recessed areas on a bronze ink stand, between them is a central figure who represents a smaller form of the monumental figural bronze by Niehaus found in Scott Circle, Washington, D.C., as part of the Samuel Hahnemann Monument (created 1896 - 1900). The larger than life bronze and marble monument was commissioned by the Homoeopathists of America to commemorate Hahnemann, a German physician and inventor of Homeopathy. The report by the Homoeopathists of America states that, "twenty-four models were submitted by sculptors from St. Louis, Chicago, Philadelphia, Boston, New Haven, Brooklyn and New York, as well as Paris, Rome and Florence." In 1895, these models were exhibited to the public and press at the American Academy of Fine Arts and Niehaus was unanimously awarded the commission. It is possible that the figure on this ink stand was a maquette or study for the figure of Dr. Hahnemann. This example is inscribed, "HANNEMANN C.H. NIEHAUS," in the bronze by the artist, total dimensions 5"h x 9.75"l x 4.5"d (12.7cm x 24.76cm x 11.43cm). Provenance: Purchased by our consignor from relatives of Niehaus. Charles Henry Niehaus (1855 - 1935, America) was an American sculptor of German ancestry who began sculpting in marble and wood. He attended the McMicken School of Design in Cincinnati and between 1881 and 1887 studied at the Royal Academy in Munich, Germany. He is best known for realistic presidential and political outdoor sculptures, many monumental in scale. Niehaus has had eight statues in the National Statuary Hall Collection at the United States Capitol in Washington, D.C., a record for a sculptor.A few of the sculptural highlights along an illustrious career are his sculptures of James A. Garfield, William McKinley, Benjamin Harrison, Moses, (Main reading room of the Library of Congress), Hackley Park in Michigan has Niehaus's depictions of Abraham Lincoln, Charles Hackley, David Farragut and William McKinley; Robert Bloom (Cincinnati Art Museum). He designed the Astor Memorial Doors (south doors), at Trinity Church in New York City (1895).
