Charles Douglas Richardson trained as an artist in Melbourne with Tom Roberts and Frederick McCubbin. As a student in London he is said to have shared a studio with Roberts and Mackennal. In 1889, he contributed twenty-five items to the now famous '9 by 5 Impression Exhibition', masterminded by Roberts (a 'reconstruction' of which is planned as a major exhibition at the National Gallery of Victoria).
