London, Gimpel Fils, Charles Pulsford, October 1953, no. 41.

Provenance

Purchased by Mrs Mallowan at the 1953 exhibition.
Purchased by the present owner circa 1985.

Notes

Pulsford's paintings incorporated images derived from ancient cultures within abstract compositions. The present work features anthropomorphic figures similar in style to those of ancient Egypt, shown flat and in profile. A similar composition is in the collection of the Royal Scottish Academy.

In 1930, the novelist Agatha Christie married the archaeologist Sir Max Mallowan, and although in her literary life she maintained her maiden name, in her private life she always referred to herself as Mrs Mallowan.

No VAT will be charged on the hammer price, but VAT at 17.5% will be added to the buyer's premium which is invoiced on a VAT inclusive basis.
