Description

CHARLES BALTHAZAR JULIEN FEVRET DE SAINT-MEMIN (FRENCH / AMERICAN, 1770-1852) VIRGINIA PORTRAIT, chalk on paper, depicting Dr. Amos Newhall (1773-1835) of Essex County. Period, and probably original gilt frame and glass with eglomise mat. According to Norfleet, Amos Newhall first appears on the Essex Co. tax records in 1810. He was listed as a doctor in 1813, and paid taxes on seven slaves, four horses, and a gig. The 1814 tax records indicate his ownership of 361 acres of land located 18 miles SE of the Court House. According to the 1830 Federal census for Essex Co., there was a total of 15 people residing in his household including four slaves. 21 3/4" x 16" sheet, 26" x 19 1/2" overall.

Condition Report

Very good overall condition, paper stabilized, the edges with staining, several short tears, and minor chipping, all of which is hidden by the mat, two small areas of scratching to glass. Frame with an added strip to reverse to allow for archival framing, and probable restoration to the gilding.

In each of the published images of this portrait it is shown with this eglomise mat. The illustration in Antiques Magazine also displays the gilt frame, and its description notes that the frame and glass are original.
