Notes

The compositions by Peteris Dzigurs deal with philosophical interpretations of world order and the Universe as an eternal work of art by God. Using language free from visual reality and rich with symbols the artist is focusing on reality and looking for causal patterns in the relationship between humans, God, world and the Universe. Artist's youth coincided with the themes widely explored in 1960s - space exploration, place of humanity in the Universe and search for life on other planets. At the time many Soviet artists explored the utopian themes of the Universe and cosmos that allowed them to lean into the direction of abstractionism, surrealism and experimental art without abiding by the cliches of Soviet realism. Meanwhile the artist was moving into direction of abstract signs, lines, rhythms and symbolic figures. Cosmogony and human elements are the main themes of the artist's works. Peteris Dzigurs has now released several catalogues, his works can be found in the Latvian National Museum of Art, Tretyakov Gallery and private collections worldwide. Peteris Dzigurs was born in 1944. gadƒ in Balvi, Latvia. Studied at the Art Academy of Latvia (1971), has been exhibiting his works since 1974.
